"月出皎兮,佼人僚兮" — Brilliant the rising moon; lovely and graceful, that one.
— Shijing (Book of Songs), c. 7th century BCE
In the imperial gardens of Tang dynasty Chang'an, one flower reigned above all others. Emperors cultivated it. Poets wrote entire collections in its honour. When it bloomed in spring, the city came to a standstill. Merchants closed their stalls, courtiers left their offices, and the whole of Chang'an walked out to look.
The peony. 牡丹. King of Flowers.
It was a symbol of prosperity, of grace, of a beauty so complete it needed no embellishment. And for over a thousand years, Chinese craftspeople have been trying to capture it: in silk, in porcelain, in jade, and now, in thread on leather, on a bag made to be carried into the world.
The Motif — Embroidered Peony
The peony has been China's most celebrated floral symbol since the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). No other flower has accumulated so much meaning: wealth, nobility, feminine grace, romantic love, the fullness of life in bloom. Classical poets compared it to the Goddess of the Luo River rising from water; the Shijing reached for it when searching for a word adequate to beauty itself.
The embroidery on this bag renders the peony in three dimensions: petals layered over petals, each catch of light revealing a new depth. This is not a printed pattern. It is high-relief cowhide embroidery (高浮绣), worked in ivory-white and warm gold silk thread on the pearl white version; antique gold on deep black. The same motif, two entirely different moods.
The design is an original registered work (Registration No. 黔作登字-2021-F-00329117). It exists nowhere else.
The Craft
Embroidering onto leather is not the same as embroidering onto fabric. Fabric forgives misplaced needles. Leather does not; every puncture is permanent, every stitch irreversible. The craftspeople who work on this bag make no mistakes they can undo.
The metallic silk thread used for the embroidery — 金属质感的丝线 — carries the shimmer of gold-wrapped thread, a technique descended from Tang and Song imperial textile workshops. The result is a surface that reads differently in different light: understated in shadow, luminous in sun.
Premium Materials
- Exterior: Split leather with transfer film coating (牛剖层移膜革) — durable, smooth to the touch, holds its form without stiffness.
- Embroidery: High-relief cowhide embroidery in metallic silk thread — three-dimensional, textured, built up in layers.
- Hardware: Gold-tone metal throughout — zipper pulls, strap clasps, and the brand's signature lattice roundel logo in 回纹 (huí wén) meander pattern.
- Interior: Three compartments: main body, inner zip pocket, and a slip pocket — everything in its place.
